With activities spanning analysis of chemical and biological drugs and their
metabolites through to novel biomarkers of drug effect and safety and a range
of omics technologies, HFL is involved in a number of leading research
projects.
These activities include ongoing internal R&D in novel method
establishment, improvement and validation, as well as research funded by
Government Agencies and National and International Sports Authorities.
One of the most interesting current examples is HFL's work to develop new sports
doping control screening approaches based on measuring the effect of the abuse
agent, instead of detecting its presence. This research is particularly
important in the light of the increased threat of abuse posed by designer
drugs, biological drugs and so-called "gene-doping". HFL is currently being
funded by both the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the Horserace Betting
Levy Board (HBLB) in these areas. Together, they form HFL's "New Solutions"
project, which HFL is leading in collaboration with a number of expert academic
institutes.
